Houston storms produce quarter-size hail, 60-mph winds

A severe thunderstorm warning was in effect Friday afternoon for east-central Harris and western Chambers counties, the National Weather Service said.

At 5:05 p.m. a severe thunderstorm was spotted over the southwestern portion of Houston Ship Channel, near Cloverleaf, moving northeast at 30 mph, forecasters said. Doppler radar indicated that the storm was capable of 60 mph wind gusts and quarter-size hail.
