Cypress Creek's Greg McCaig announces retirement after 21 years with school

Greg McCaig is hanging up his whistle.

The longtime Cypress Creek head football coach recently announced his retirement after 21 years at the school.

McCaig spent nearly three decades as a head coach with stops at Giddings and Stratford before taking over at Cypress Creek. While his impact extends beyond the field, his résumé is bolstered by 148 victories and three regional final appearances.

"The community had really high expectations about how we were supposed to do and the way we did things," McCaig said of his time at Cypress Creek. "That was a massive draw. We had terrific administration. And then in Cy-Fair (ISD), you had all the resources you needed to be successful. All of those things combined worked out to be really good."

Three weekend takeaways

Brining the firepower: With the soccer playoffs quickly approaching, the Atascocita girls are hoping to make some noise. With new head coach Blake Bellow leading the charge, the Eagles have young team ready to make a deep postseason run.

Immediate impact: First-year Paetow baseball coach Javier Valdez has quickly turned the program into a winner. After going 10-19 last season, the Panthers are off to a strong 15-3 start this time around. That includes a 4-0 start to District 19-6A action.

Setting the standard: The Lake Creek girls soccer team has been making significant strides this season. Led by new head coach Alyssa Maynard, the Lions have set program records for most wins and goals in a single season. Now their attention turns to the playoffs.
