Today we're talking about Biden's and Trump's dueling campaign rallies at the Texas border...
If you read one thing: Just days before the March 5 primary, President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump are each headed to the Texas border Thursday for split-screen appearances, underscoring the weight that immigration is taking in their expected rematch this November.
Where is Biden headed?
Biden is set to land in Brownsville this afternoon to meet with Border Patrol agents and local leaders. He is expected to use the trip to renew calls for new immigration laws and shame the GOP for playing "political games" on the border after Senate Republicans this month blocked a bipartisan proposal aimed at curbing crossings.
Trump mounted a pressure campaign against the bill — which included reforms to the asylum system, millions of dollars for the Border Patrol and new authority for the president to turn away migrants — arguing it would be a political victory for Biden months before the presidential election.
Where is Trump headed?
Trump, meanwhile, is headed to Eagle Pass, the epicenter of a fight between Texas Gov. Greg Abbott and the Biden administration over the state's growing border crackdown.
Trump has cheered on Texas' efforts there, including its takeover of a public park on the Rio Grande, where state soldiers have prevented Border Patrol agents from apprehending and processing migrants, as he has ratcheted up anti-immigrant rhetoric. Trump is expected to appear on Sean Hannity's Fox News show from the park, and Abbott and U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz are also expected to appear on the program.
The former president is calling for a major clampdown on immigration going even further than his first term, and his campaign has floated rounding up immigrants into camps and mass deportations if he retakes the White House.
