NEW YEAR SALE: Only 99¢ for Access! |
The RodeoHouston lineup drops tonight. I want to know what you think.
It's Rodeo time, y'all.
The 2024 lineup will be announced at 7 p.m. tonight. We'll have it up on the houstonchronicle.com, ready for your reactions. And I know there will be many. Once you run through it, I'd love to know what you think. Really! Email me your thoughts at joey.guerra@houstonchronicle.com. I plan to use some of them for a story later this week.
I once tried to count how many Rodeo show's I've attended/reviewed. I got close to 400 before it got all jumbled up in my brain. That's not even counting the regular concerts I've seen.
I've been lucky enough to see some of my favorite artists at RodeoHouston. I've seen others I didn't love so much. And I've been surprised multiple times. I will never, ever forget seeing Diana Ross run across the dirt floor in a ball gown. The entire stadium singing "Big Girls Don't Cry" at full voice with Fergie. Destiny's Child repeating songs inside the Astrodome to get different angles for a pay-per-view concert. Taking my son to see Panic! At the Disco, who he loved at the time.
I'm sure something, good or bad, will stand out this year. Giddyup.

Gonna make you (Keith) Sweat
R&B singer Keith Sweat is part of my look at 2024's upcoming concerts. He had an impressive run of hits, starting with 1987's "I Want Her" (my favorite) and continuing with "Twisted," "Nobody" and "Make it Last Forever." He performs Jan. 13 at Smart Financial Centre at Sugar Land, 18111 Lexington; $82; smartfinancialcentre.net. The bill also includes Dru Hill, Johnny Gill and Levelle.
- Let's dance (David Bowie voice): Numbers nightclub's annual celebration of all things David Bowie is this weekend. It's a blast and attracts a diverse swath of people, from boomers to hipsters to goth kids. DJ Wes Wallace spins Bowie all night, and the first 200 people in the door get a Bowie magnet. 9 p.m. Jan. 13 at 300 Westheimer.
- Beyoncé watch: Is Destiny's Child reuniting? For real this time? The members have been seen together a lot lately, and Letoya Luckett recently posted a photo of them together on Instagram. The rumor has been going around for years. Don't play with me, Beyoncé.

Here kitty, kitty
I went to my first cat show last year, and it was way more fun than I anticipated. Cats everywhere! The Houston Cat Club hosts its 71st charity show this weekend at the Hilton Houston North. There will be costume contests (for the cats) and a Meow Mall. 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Jan. 13 and 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Jan 14 at 12400 Greenspoint; $15 adults, $10 kids ages 5-12.
- You got game? Even if you're not into video games, Cidercade is still a fun time. It's loud, lively and offers an array of hard ciders, seltzers and sodas that are made in-house. Admission is $12 and gets you unlimited play on almost 300 games.

Fit for a king (cake)
If you're looking for a good king cake, this guide to some of the best ones in the Houston area should help. The one pictured from Common Bond, I can say from experience, is delicious. And why is it always so exciting to find the baby?
- Follow the yellow brick road: Chatter's Cafe and Bistro in the Heights will host a "Wizard of Oz"-themed pop-up bar featuring themed drinks and more. Click your heels, and cough up the cash, for a visit from March 6 - April 28. A 90-minute slot comes with two cocktails and costs $45. Why am I telling you now? Because these events tend to sell out quickly.

- Entertainer to know: Sapphira Cristál is a Houston native, Kinder HSPVA grad and standout on the new season of "RuPaul's Drag Race." You'll never look at opera the same way again. She comes home Jan. 12 for a performance at South Beach nightclub in Montrose.
