It's still early days, but Sugar Land is exploring the possibility of building a senior center on its 65-acre parkland near the James Reese Career and Technical Center.
City representatives made it clear that nothing was official, the discussion was in its early and exploratory phase, and they have nowhere near the required funding.
If everything goes well, this might appear on the November 2024 ballot in a bond election.
Fort Bend residents are familiar with the story of Fort Bend ISD's Reese Center--bones were unearthed during its construction five years ago. The site had been an old cemetery, serving as the final resting place for leased convicts who had died in brutal conditions over a century ago.
Addressing concerns regarding the existence of additional unmarked graves, Fenglin Du, the city's parks development manager said an archaeological study had found no cause for alarm.
"For the rest of the area, if we move forward, we will do another archaeological study," Du said in a phone interview. "Archaeological studies are expensive, with the most recent one costing $2,000."
