Heated playoff race shaping up for Houston boys basketball

We may not be totally clear of freezing weather here in Houston this winter. But there's no doubt that the boys basketball playoff stretch run is really starting to heat up.

Look no further than Wednesday night.

First-place teams Klein Cain, Cypress Ranch, Stratford, Dickinson and Manvel were all handed their first losses of district play.

There's still a month ago, but both of Houston's UIL state tournament teams from a year ago are still red-hot. Houston ISD's Washington is dominating in Class 4A, while Hitchcock is looking to repeat as champions in Class 3A.

Take a look at the playoff picture as the calendar trends toward February.

Girls basketball news

Carlton sisters dominating: The Seven Lakes Spartans are in the midst of a three-way race for the District 19-6A title. Sisters Justice and Madison Carlton have been a huge factor in the team's current 13-game winning streak, including an 80-61 win over Tompkins Wednesday night.

Brown's lofty goals: Summer Creek senior Mariyah Brown's confidence is at an all-time high as the No. 6 state-ranked Bulldogs chase dreams of a state title. The versatile Brown is averaging nearly a double-double per game with 12 points and nine rebounds.
