New businesses, facilities opening in Alvin, Manvel

The northern Brazoria County area, which includes Pearland, Alvin and Manvel, has seen an increase in new businesses and facilities over the last year. 

In Manvel, the Highway 6 corridor continues to develop alongside the new Town Center. Shipley opened a new location down State Highway 288, an 8-minute drive from the new H-E-B.

Alvin will purchase the Thelma Ley Anderson YMCA builing for $5.6 million, with plans to turn it into a recreational facility owned and operated by the city.

Alvin YMCA building to be transformed into city recreation center.

Alvin city council approved the purchase of the Thelma Ley Anderson YMCA building at a city council meeting to transform it into a recreational facility owned and operated by the city.

The original Shipley Do-Nuts location is still open for business at 3932 N. Main in Houston Friday, Aug. 10, 2023.

Shipley had record-setting 2023 while sales jumped by more than 6%.

Houston-based Shipley Do-Nuts opened stores in Maryland and Georgia in early 2023.

The Pearland girls basketball team has been dominating this season. Freshman A'Zyua Blair is part of the youth movement leading the team to success.


One last thing …

The American Red Cross announced an emergency blood shortage after it found that the nation faced the lowest number of people donating blood in 20 years, according to Houston Chronicle reporter Octavia Johnson.
