How the playoff picture shapes up for Houston-area girls basketball

One year ago at this time, Houston-area girls basketball teams like Pearland and Fulshear were grinding out games during the stretch run of district play.

The Oilers (Class 6A) and the Chargers (Class 5A) had their eyes on San Antonio and the UIL state tournament.

But in order reach the Alamodome, teams need to do very well in district play and build a strong foundation for the playoffs. Challenging games in the first month of the calendar year can often result in battle-tested teams come February, where it takes a couple high-intensity wins per week to keep advancing in the bracket.

District titles are one thing for the elite programs around Houston. Simply making the playoffs can also be a huge accomplishment for a team on the rise.

This week, we take a look at the playoff picture with examinations of the districts standings, a look at key games ahead and some context on what it all means.

The playoffs begin exactly a month from Friday.
