The Battleship Texas may find a permanent home in Galveston.
My first visit to the Battleship Texas was during a childhood field trip when it was docked at the San Jacinto Battleground State Historic Site.
It seemed like it would stay docked there forever, and for many of us who grew up in the area – Deer Park, Pasadena, and La Porte – it felt like it belonged there.
The ship was just always there, and always in the shadow of the San Jacinto Monument.
But nothing lasts forever, right?
Time took its toll and in 2022 the World War I and II warship was moved to Galveston Bay for major repairs. That's where it sits now, and where it may have found a permanent home.
The Galveston Wharves Board of Trustees is supporting an effort to keep the ship at the center of a tourism and visitor hub in Galveston Bay, and the Battleship Texas Foundation hopes to secure funding to completely renovate the ship and preserve its place as one of the last dreadnoughts in existence.
According to Battleship Texas Foundation president Tony Gregory, the main goal is to share its history with more people.
Instead of a monument and marshland, the Battleship Texas would be surrounded by hotels, restaurants, and cruise terminals.
It was bittersweet to see the ship leave its former home, but Galveston is not that far from the San Jacinto Battleground State Historic Site.
