Today's starting lineup

After three years of moribund football, the Texans have taken their fans on a thrill ride the past two months, with eight consecutive one-score games. Jonathan M. Alexander takes a deeper look at all the close shaves entering today's game against the Jets. Texans radio broadcaster Marc Vandermeer, a franchise fixture from day one, discusses what it's been like to call eight straight games decided in the final 30 seconds. Rookie center Juice Scruggs has had to get up to speed as he plays a new position upon returning from injured reserve. For those affected by the carriage dispute between DirecTV/AT&T and KHOU owner Tegna, here are some alternate ways to watch today's game.

Willie Fritz made it apparent early on in his introductory news conference that he's the right choice as UH's new football coach, Jerome Solomon writes. At Texas A&M, new offensive coordinator Collin Klein once helped usher in a memorable era for the Aggies when he played for Kansas State. LSU's Jayden Daniels becomes the rare Heisman Trophy winner of late who didn't play for a conference champion.

After a so-so first half, third-ranked UH turns it up to blow out Jackson State for the third 10-0 start in the basketball program's history. Texas A&M, ranked No. 21, gets a nonconference test today when Penny Hardaway's Memphis squad visits College Station.

Superstar Shohei Ohtani's free agency ends with the biggest contract in MLB history: 10 years and $700 million from the Dodgers.

North Shore and Summer Creek will play for state football championships next week after winning their semifinals Saturday.

Stat of the day: 3. LSU players to win the Heisman Trophy: Billy Cannon (1959), Joe Burrow (2019) and Jayden Daniels (2023).

Staying perfect

After some halftime introspection, No. 3 UH cranks it up to blow out Jackson State and improve to 10-0 for just the third time in program history. The only other times the Cougars began 10-0 were in 1967-68 and 2018-19.
