Another arm
In the Cheap Seats, Chron sports writers answer burning questions from readers.
Should the Astros pursue another relief pitcher in free agency?
Chron sports writer Michael Shapiro:
General manager Dana Brown recently tabbed former top prospect Forrest Whitley as a potential bullpen candidate in 2024, and the Astros added another relief arm Wednesday in a trade for Kansas City Royals righty Dylan Coleman. But Major League production from Whitley is never guaranteed, and Coleman allowed 18 earned runs in 18 innings last season. Something in the way of reliability feels much needed behind Houston's dynamic duo of Ryan Pressly and Bryan Abreu.
No, the Astros aren't spending the nine figures likely necessary to land closer Josh Hander. Perhaps a right-handed fireballer could be of interest. The Astros were recently mentioned by the New York Post's Jon Heyman as a team to watch regarding free-agent reliever Jordan Hicks.
