We had our doubts about going to Oaxaca. Sometimes a destination can feel too… obvious. And perhaps too pressured already by international tourism. But then we remembered a guiding truth of the League of Travelers: the right friends will lead the way. So we are very pleased that we have reconnected with an old friend in Oaxaca, Ana Paulina Garcia, doyenne of Boulenc and Suculenta. Her beautiful life of ingredients and connections throughout the valleys and mountains of Oaxaca is our guiding light. It will keep us close to the magic and mystery of this incredible region. So, with pride, we are announcing our next journey:
Oaxaca Reborn Sep 21-25, 2024
Your Hosts: Ana Paulina Garcia, Gonzalo Gil Lavedra and Alejo Sabugo
In addition to being a collaboration with Paulina, this journey will also be hosted by our charismatic duo Gonzalo Gil Lavedra and Alejo Sabugo, who had worked as fixers for René Redzepi and Anthony Bourdain respectively and, well, are just very good at what they do. Together it's the best of Oaxaca and the best of the League.
What to Expect: New Visions, Ancient Culture
1. A Region Remaking Itself: Oaxaca has always been a rebellious place, a citadel of cultural and creative resistance. The intoxicating combination continues: deep roots but also creative newcomers. Incredible products and talented chefs and distillers and artists. We'll meet them all in our time here.
2. Luxury Accommodations: Boulenc's new luxury hotel Pan y Posada (opening in Spring 2024) will be the perfect home base, just across the street from the fragrant ovens of Boulenc, and a short walk from everything you need in the center of the city.
3. Mountain Cabins and Mushroom Hunting: When you find someone you truly admire, their obsessions become your obsessions. And Paulina is obsessed with the mushroom culture of rural Oaxaca. So we have selected a perfect set of mountain cabins in Cuajimoloyas, where we'll spent the third night, with warming drinks in front of the wood-fueled chimeneas after a day of foraging and cooking with the iconic Marta of the Mountains.
4. The City of the Dead: Mitla is on the other end of the high valley from Oaxaca. There is no place on earth like it. The spiritual center of Zapotec culture, it is home to a portal to the underworld, riven with sacred caves and tunnels. It is also one of the birthplaces of ancient corn, a center of both wild and domestic agave. It has, as they say there, a vibra—a vibration. Unforgettable.
5. Private Dinners: Irreproducible, exclusive dining experiences, whether al fresco at at Discípulo Mezcal in the shadow of the Fortaleza of Mitla (pictured above), or upstairs at the gorgeous new Nois restaurant in the care of world-traveling Oaxacan chef Rodrigo Amaury. Also, a mindbending private mezcal tasting in a hidden cantina in the center of town because… why not?
