Today we're talking about Governor Abbott's special session on education and border security... |
If you read one thing: State lawmakers return to Austin today for a special legislative session focused on border security and private school vouchers. The Senate and the House of Representatives will convene at 1 p.m. for a session that could last up to 30 days. What's on the agenda? Gov. Greg Abbott has listed four general topics for the special session. His top priority is "education savings accounts," or measures allowing parents to use state money to send their children to private schools.
He also wants legislators to further crack down on border security and prohibit private employers from instituting COVID vaccine mandates.
Finally, he has asked legislators to pass policies "concerning public safety, security, environmental quality, and property ownership" in areas like Colony Ridge, a sprawling development just northeast of Houston that has recently become the target of a fringe conspiracy theory. Why is Colony Ridge on the agenda? The governor is calling on legislators to investigate public safety in the Colony Ridge development, which has historically been an escape for low-income and immigrant families fleeing rising housing costs. Republicans have asserted, without evidence, that Mexican cartels control parts of the development, and that the area is a settlement for undocumented immigrants. Abbott's special session call requests legislation "concerning public safety, security, environmental quality, and property ownership in areas like" Colony Ridge. Read Cayla Harris' full story here.
