What if we got serious about border challenges?

A cartoon guide to vouchers and puppet masters Wilks and Dunn.

Good morning.

We're deep into the work of election endorsements, rolling them out as we have them ready even as we continue with research and interviews for the big one --- mayor of Houston. We aim to finish our recommendations in time for those die-hard, mail-in voters who like to lay out all the information they can at their kitchen tables as they fill out their ballots early. Consult as many sources as you can but remember that many of the endorsement slates you may be getting by mail are pay-to-play. We, on the other hand, share our independent analysis so at least you can disagree with us in an informed way.

Remember, it's not too late to register to vote --- the deadline is Oct. 10 --- or to request a mail-in ballot.

In case you didn't read our Sunday section, don't miss the editorial on immigration and Nick Anderson's cartoon guide to the fight over school vouchers. A true cold front is on the way, but the scenes reported from the border are harrowing and the GOP's internecine war over education keeps heating up in Austin.

We recommend Letitia Plummer for Houston City Council, At-Large Position 4 (Editorial)

Plummer's willingness to be an independent voice for Houston and a check on the mayor is refreshing when other councilmembers often fail to speak up.
