Good morning.

This is it.

Early voting starts today. Check out our full list of recommendations here. Texas law does not allow phones in the voting booth, so take a printout of the webpage or a copy of the newspaper.

We screened candidates in 17 races and researched 28 ballot measures. When a race has more than one strong candidate or there are reasons to take a different position than us on a proposition, we include that information so you can come to your own conclusion.

For our mayoral endorsement, we collected questionnaires from candidates who had served in public office or could finance a viable campaign. We filmed one-on-one interviews and then held a screening for the three on our shortlist, drilling down on top priorities such as reducing crime. We watched debates, talked to our neighbors, pulled decades-old news stories and interviewed the colleagues of candidates. All along, we discussed our findings as a board, generating new questions that took us back to the candidates. Only then did we come to a decision to endorse state Sen. John Whitmire.

Let us know what you think at viewpoints@houstonchronicle.com and, if you have the option, please get out there and vote.

Tony Buzbee for City Council? Keep Mary Nan Huffman in...

No doubt Buzbee, who led AG Paxton's impeachment acquittal, would be a louder voice for the district, but as the incumbent, Huffman has proven she's effective.

Vote "for" Prop 13 to raise retirement age for judges

Age is but one of many aspects to consider when evaluating Texas judges, but it shouldn't be the sole determining factor of their competence.

Council member Carolyn Evans-Shabazz speaks during a meeting with residents of Riverside Terrace in Third Ward as they denounced the proposed Riverside Terrace Historic District at Good Hope Missionary Baptist Church on May 12, 2022, in Houston. They say a minority of homeowners sought the historic district status and that it would be onerous for longtime owners, who cannot meet the historic specifications for repairs and upkeep and will force families who have been in the area for generations to live in homes they cannot afford to repair or sell all together. They say there was never a public meeting.
