Nassau Bay plans to move a memorial plaque that is at its city dog park.

This is a sad situation.

In 2020, the City of Nassau Bay dedicated a plaque at the city's dog park in memory of Chris Reed, a respected figure to many in the Bay Area region.

Reed had been in law enforcement, and active in city government, in schools, and he was a former U.S. paratrooper and a recipient of a Law Enforcement Purple Heart, a wrestling coach and mixed martial arts fighter and referee.

Mike Barrett's son was 9 years old in 2011 when he was attacked by a dog owned by Reed.

The injuries were extensive, and at one point, the child developed an infection in his leg and amputation became a possibility, but he eventually recovered fully.

Since 2019, the Barrett family have expressed their discomfort of Chris Reed's name being attached to a dog park.

During its Oct. 16 meeting, city council members listened as residents said that the dog attack shouldn't erase Reed's contributions to his community, and to others who believe the plaque at the dog park entrance is an insult to the Barrett family.

Read more here about what the Nassau Bay city council is proposing to honor and respect the needs of both families.
