League City honors Alexander Winfield, one of the town's first Black settlers.
Alexander Winfield had nerve — at least that's how his great granddaughter, Deborah Konrad, sees him.
He was the first Black resident to buy land in League City and the city council recently passed a resolution to acknowledge his contributions and name a street in his honor. Winfield will now be mentioned alongside Butler and Hobbs, two other prominent names in the city's early development.
What took so long?
Former mayor Pat Hallisey believes his story got lost amid the racial climate of the times. Hallisey said he's proud of the current council for correcting that oversight and finally securing Winfield's place in the city's history.
The future roadway is in the planning stages, but Konrad hopes it brings attention to her great grandfather's story.
