League City honors one of the town's first Black settlers with street name

League City honors Alexander Winfield, one of the town's first Black settlers.

Alexander Winfield had nerve — at least that's how his great granddaughter, Deborah Konrad, sees him.

He was the first Black resident to buy land in League City and the city council recently passed a resolution to acknowledge his contributions and name a street in his honor. Winfield will now be mentioned alongside Butler and Hobbs, two other prominent names in the city's early development.

What took so long?

Former mayor Pat Hallisey believes his story got lost amid the racial climate of the times. Hallisey said he's proud of the current council for correcting that oversight and finally securing Winfield's place in the city's history.

The future roadway is in the planning stages, but Konrad hopes it brings attention to her great grandfather's story.

Dobie junior running back Cameron Mathews was a big factor in his team's big district win over Pasadena.

Sports reporter Ted Dunnam writes how Mathews had runs of 18, 79 and 21 yards in the opening half and gained 147 yards on 7 carries before intermission. He also caught a 60-yard screen pass on a one-play drive that allowed the Longhorns to good start with a 22-0 first-quarter lead.
