Fort Bend's vibrant Hispanic Heritage Festival features music, dance, special guest Karina Luna.

Hispanic Heritage Month is celebrated to honor the contributions, cultures, histories and achievements of Hispanic and Latino Americans.

The month-long observance runs from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15.

Sept. 15 marks the independence anniversaries of several Latin American countries, including Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. Mexico and Chile celebrate their independence days on September 16 and September 18.

The observation started in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week under President Lyndon Johnson and was expanded by President Ronald Reagan in 1988 to cover 30 days.

Don't miss the Hispanic Heritage Festival on Saturday, Oct. 7, at the Fort Bend County Historic Courthouse. All are invited to enjoy Hispanic cuisine, live music, and dance performances at this free, family event. An attorney will be present offering immigration education.

Here's where you can see the annular solar eclipse for free in the Houston suburbs. Do not look at the eclipse without eye protection.
