Today's starting lineup

The Texans play their home opener against the Colts. It's been a frustrating few years for Texans fans, to say the least. But many keep coming back.

Why? Several tell our Brooks Kubena of what keeps bringing them back.

On the field, Houston and Indianapolis will each be led by Black quarterbacks. In fact, 14 of the starters in Week 1 in the NFL were Black. It's welcome sign of the times. Jonathan M. Alexander with the story.

The Astros had another frustrating night against a 100-loss team. After losing two of three at home to the A's, Houston has lost two in a row in Kansas City. J.P. France had troubles with walks again.

In college football, Saturday was supposed to be a big day for UH, the Cougars first game as a member of the Big 12. And while the day was special, the performance on the field was not. Jerome Solomon says this year could be a long one. And after another poor offensive performance in a 36-13 loss to TCU, changes could be coming.

Rice is the unofficial city champion after beating TSU. The Owls had taken care of UH last week.

In Austin, Texas finally shook off the post-Alabama doldrums to beat Wyoming. In College Station, the Aggies treated their game with Louisana-Monroe as if it were an SEC game. The result was a 47-3 win.

Stat of the day: 3,271. Days since UH went without an offensive touchdown.

Why Texans season-ticket holders stuck around

After the pandemic season and two years of sparse crowds as the Texans struggled, the team is nearing a sellout Sunday. Fans explain why they'll be back.

  • QB evolution: Fourteen Week 1 starters, including the Texans' C.J. Stroud, show how far the league has come since Doug Williams and Warren Moon were their own demographic.

Astros insider: Walks, errors and another loss

J.P. France walked three or fewer batters in his first 20 starts but Saturday's loss was latest in a disturbing trend.

Solomon: UH's first year in Big 12 could be a long one

It was a special day for the UH program, its first football game in Big 12, but a bad day on the field, a 36-13 loss to TCU.

How Texas A&M bounced back

The Aggies played Louisiana-Monroe like it was an SEC game.

  • Texas A&M 47, Louisiana-Monroe 3: Texas A&M rebounded from a loss at No. 22 Miami as SEC play is up next.
  • City champions: With wins over UH and TSU, the Rice Owls are Houston's finest.
  • Rice 59, TSU 7: In a lopsided affair, Rice had its way with TSU. The Owls showed up offensively and defensively, putting together favorable numbers.
