Today's starting lineup
Justin Verlander's first Astros start six years ago was in Seattle. He was back in the Pacific Northwest on Monday, taking the ball in his biggest regular-season start for Houston. The future Hall of Famer delivered a vintage performance, taking a shutout into the ninth inning as the Astros picked up a huge win in the opener of the three-game series against the Mariners. With a clutch early hit, Mauricio Dubón gave Verlander the lead he needed as part of a big second inning. Verlander's stellar start was part of the rotation reversal the Astros badly need if they're to clinch a seventh straight playoff berth.
The Texans enjoyed their first Monday fresh off a win this season. What did we learn from that triumph in Jacksonville? Jonathan M. Alexander shares his takeaways from the victory.
Saturday's visit for UH brings new quarterback Donovan Smith together with the Texas Tech team he left behind after last season. At Texas A&M, all eyes are on QB Conner Weigman's health after he left last weekend's game with a leg injury. Texas' loss to Kansas in 2021 left the Longhorns the butt of jokes, but the setback exposed warts in the program that needed addressing, says coach Steve Sarkisian.
Stat of the day: 12. Starts by Justin Verlander as an Astro, including Monday, when he pitched eight innings and allowed one earned run or fewer.
