Here's how to join the Cypress leg of the Bayou City Half Marathon Series this fall.

Calling all Houston-area runners.

The Bayou City Half Marathon Series is set to return this November with the Cypress Half Marathon and 5K.

Participants in the Bayou City Half Marathon Series races will race in the in-person or virtual half marathon, 5K or kids' 1K. 

Participants in these races will receive custom medals and the top three winners will receive additional medals. The Cypress leg of this series started in 2015 and throughout the years, has attracted more than 1,800 athletes who have raised more than $778,000 for a variety of charities. 

If you aren't able to make it to the Cypress race, Bayou City Half Marathon Series will host races in Katy and Minute Maid Park next year.

Beginning Monday, Houston-area Whataburger diners can get a free burger with a $1 donation to the Houston Food Bank.

Starbucks and a health clinic recently registered projects with the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation.

Texas school districts can use innovation status to bypass teacher certification, calendar laws..

Almost every school district in Texas is using the "District of Innovation" designation to exempt themselves from laws regulating the school calendar start date and mandating certified teachers. 


Openings and closings

Cadence Creek at Towne Lake opened a new community for people 55 years old or older at 11411 Greenhouse Road. This community offers resort-style living with a dining lounge, theater room, game room and pool. 


Shout out

Shout out to Owen Cossette, Jr of Cypress Ranch making the Chronicle's Houston high school football top performers of week 4 with an insane nine-touchdown game.

Cossette finished this past week with 479 passing yards and eight passing touchdowns in a 66-41 victory over Cy Woods. He also had a rushing score.


One last thing ...

This year's flu season could be worse than normal, according to Houston doctors.

They say Houstonians should be sure to get their flu shots by early October.
