If you read one thing: Attorney General Ken Paxton emerged this week from his impeachment fight emboldened and determined to play a central role in what could be the state's most turbulent GOP primary cycle in years.
What is Paxton saying?
"What they did was wrong," Paxton said of his House critics in an interview Thursday with conservative radio host Mark Davis. "I will be on the campaign trail. I'm highly motivated."
He told Davis this cycle he would spend "a lot of time" in the districts represented by House Speaker Dade Phelan and state Rep. Andrew Murr, a fellow Republican who spearheaded the impeachment.
Who is supporting Paxton?
The effort will have sizable support from Defend Texas Liberty PAC, a group known for targeting GOP lawmakers whom its funders — West Texas oil magnates Tim Dunn and Farris Wilks — consider insufficiently conservative.
How are Phelan and others responding?
Phelan promised an aggressive campaign of his own to protect GOP incumbents facing competitive primaries. There weren't any immediate signs of a revolt from Republicans who supported the impeachment, though most have remained silent in the days since Paxton's acquittal.
