Until just last week, I was eagerly looking forward to a beach trip, but that was before red tides arrived.
Areas of the Texas Gulf Coast are experiencing an overgrowth of a reddish-brown algae that is causing dead fish to wash ashore, shellfish poisoning and sinus infections in humans.
It doesn't help that it sounds like a Biblical plague.
"As of now all beaches are still open, but beachgoers should be aware of possible dead fish, as well as possible sinus and respiratory symptoms that can be caused by airborne algae spores near Gulf Waters," says the Brazoria County Parks Department alert.
For more information on red tides associated health risks, contact the Texas Department of State Health Services.
