Fochtman: It's 5:30 p.m. on Friday afternoon in Willis, and I've found myself soaking wet alongside my new, also soaking wet, friends Brandford William and Charles Perry Sr. in the white cinder block confines of the men's bathroom seeking shelter from a thunderstorm.
We joked: How did we get here?
Earlier that day, Photo Editor Jill Karnicki asked the staff to look for weather features. With a 7 p.m. football game between Conroe & Willis, no time to go anywhere else and dark clouds moving in, I figured it was the perfect time to document people preparing for the game.
I caught William and Perry in the stadium parking lot moving tailgating supplies under a row of small purple tents.
As the rain turned from a slight sprinkle into stinging rain, the wind also intensified. The tents we were under for shelter, suddenly started coming out of their weighted positions and flipping up as the wind ripped through.
With our options for nearby shelter quickly dwindling, the three of us booked it to the restroom for the next hour and change.
Once the storm finally passed, I made my way across the parking lot, which still had a light coat of standing water on it to reveal a neat reflection of the sky.
Still soaked, I really wanted nothing more than my fresh set of spare clothes in my car across the way, but I couldn't pass up the chance to workshop one more photo as fans started arriving for the game.
As I finally made my way back to the car, William shouted my way.
"Come get you some food, brother," he said. "We earned it!"
"Another time, I've got a game to cover," I replied.
