Astros pick up huge series win as tempers boil over in Seattle

The Astros are still in control of their playoff fate. In a high-stakes showdown Wednesday in Seattle, Houston took control in the middle innings en route to a huge win and series triumph over the Mariners, adding to their lead in the wild-card race. The simmering rivalry between the divisional rivals boiled over as the benches cleared following Astros reliever Hector Neris' strikeout of Mariners star Julio Rodríguez. The Astros will have today off before beginning the final series of the regular season Friday in Arizona.

The revamped Dynamo dominated from the start, weathered a late scare and brought home their first U.S, Open Cup championship since 2018 with a road win over Inter Miami, whose superstar Lionel Messi watched from a suite because of an injury.

After being sidelined two weeks with a bruised lung, Texans safety Jalen Pitre was glad to be back at practice. Beat writer Jonathan M. Alexander answers readers' questions after the season's first win. And ahead of his Ring of Honor induction, J.J. Watt has a message of thanks for Texans fans.

Stat of the day: 3. Coaches in 108 years to win the U.S. Open Cup with two different MLS teams. The Dynamo's Ben Olsen, who also won with D.C. United, joined Sigi Schmid (LA Galaxy, Seattle) and Óscar Parejoa (FC Dallas, Orlando City).

Still in control

In their biggest regular-season game in nearly a decade, the Astros got key contributions across the board in picking up a series win against the Mariners and building on their wild-card lead.

  • Tempers flare: A season series that's simmered with tension boiled over Wednesday after Astros reliever Hector Neris struck out Mariners star Julio Rodríguez. prompting the benches to clear.
  • Familiar face returns: The Astros got one veteran bat back with Michael Brantley's return Wednesday but Chas McCormick didn't start after being hit in the back the night before.
  • Arms agenda: For now, the Astros' plan is to start J.P. France and Justin Verlander in the first two games of their final regular-season series in Arizona. But those plans could change.

Their Cup runneth over

In a matchup between two retooled franchises, it was the Dynamo that won the U.S. Open Cup by beating Inter Miami on the road as Lionel Messi sat out.

Week 6: Games to watch

There are more enticing games this week around the Houston area, including one of just nine matchups of unbeaten teams across the entire state.

  • Turning things around: A win over Strake Jesuit in their district opener has Elsik, which went 5-43 over the previous five seasons, off to a 3-1 start this year under coach Shea Rodriguez.
