Today's starting lineup
Let's not talk about the Astros just yet. Instead, we begin with an inspiring story from college football.
Sam Salz had never played organized football at any level. Growing up in a Jewish household in Philadelphia, he wanted to play college football. When he came to Texas A&M, he ran drills on his own in old soccer cleats at a field next to Kyle Field.
He did enough to earn a spot on A&M's scout team as a receiver. But as an Orthodox Jew he is unable to compete on the Jewish Sabbath that spans from sundown Friday to sundown Saturday, when most college football games are played, including Saturday's vs. Auburn.
Danielle Lerner has the story of Salz.
As for the rest of the Aggies, they open SEC play at home against Auburn. It's a clean slate for Jimbo Fisher's team. Over in Waco, third-ranked Texas starts its final Big 12 schedule against old rival Baylor in what may be the last game between the Longhorns and Bears.
Houston, which lost its Big 12 opener to TCU last week, gets what it hopes will be a non-conference breather against Sam Houston. Rice will face a test on the road in its AAC opener against South Florida, which gave Alabama all it wanted last week.
Sticking with football, we turn to the Texans. On the positive side, receiver Nico Collins appears to be finding his groove thanks to a tip from Brandin Cooks. On the flip side, there's Derek Stingley Jr., who will be lost for four weeks with a hamstring injury.
The Rockets are a little over a week from training camp. Their two first-round picks — Amen Thompson and Cam Whitmore — promise to have many firsts together. On Friday, it was throwing out the first pitch at the Astros' game.
Which brings us back to baseball. For a while it looked like Thompson's throw would be the best of the night as Framber Valdez allowed four runs in the first inning. The Astros would eventually fall again to the Royals and dropped out of first place in the AL West.
Only eight games remain for the Astros to "flip that switch and activate playoff mode," as Yordan Alvarez said.
Stat of the day: 5.25. The ERA for Astros' starters in September.
