A school's architecture tells a neighborhood's story

I don't often write about the architecture in new schools because, quite frankly, it's often cookie cutter simple and very predictable. So when folks from Yellowstone Schools reached out to tell me that construction on their new upper school was finished, I was excited.

This one is as "un-school" as you can get. It sits behind the former Frederick Douglass Elementary School, a traditional red brick structure — with a coat of red paint on top — that in a few years will mark its 100th birthday. Instead of trying to mimic Douglass, architects at Kirksey Architecture wanted to create something that reflected the community. Sections of the building pop up like row houses, the shotgun-style homes that once were abundant in Third Ward. Inside, wall graphics that show the school's "Y" logo in gray, yellow and white are a nod to the geometry used in murals by John T. Biggers, the artist who helped found the art department at Texas Southern University.

This newsletter also brings you stories about our first Color of the Year announcement, as HGTV Home by Sherwin-Williams makes Persimmon — a terracotta-tangerine combination — its pick for 2024. You'll also find a story about Preservation Houston calling for nominations for 2024 Good Brick Awards, and a tribute by my colleague Greg Morago to the late restaurateur Tony Mandola, who died recently.

Architecture + Design

The newly renovated Yellowstone Schools is photographed on Friday, Aug. 11, 2023 at Third Ward in Houston. One part of the school is the 100-year-old Frederick Douglass Elementary, which Yellowstone bought from HISD. Another part is new expansion as Yellowstone adds a 6-12 school.
