Today's starting lineup
The Astros had a chance Wednesday to move into a share of first place for the first time this season. Instead, they couldn't solve their season-long bugaboo — extra innings — as they lost in 10 to the Red Sox. Another troubling recent trend continued as starter José Urquidy turned in an abbreviated outing, forcing Houston to again dip into its bullpen early. The Astros did get José Abreu back from the injured list while Michael Brantley and Phil Maton are progressing in their recoveries.

No lengthy solution
On a day when the Astros needed length from their starter, they again didn't get it Wednesday, forcing them to go to a taxed bullpen earlier than desired yet again in a loss to the Red Sox.
- Still extra painful: Extra innings continue to be a stumbling block for the Astros, who fell in 10 innings to Boston as their offense largely went silent after the early frames.
- Abreu returns: José Abreu was activated from the injured list, but it's unclear if the veteran first baseman will return to an everyday role with the Astros.
- Making strides: Astros outfielder Michael Brantley and reliever Phil Maton each took steps toward potential returns from their respective injury absences.
- Simply 'surreal' debut: Making his MLB debut in Houston was part of the dream for one-time Astros prospect Wilyer Abreu. He did it Tuesday, but with the Red Sox.
- Shohei shut down: Shohei Ohtani, baseball's biggest star, won't pitch for the rest of the season because of a tear in an elbow ligament.

- Black hats in Austin: Texas' last ride through the Big 12 will see the Longhorns embrace the role of villains. That should make for some fun, writes Jerome Solomon.

Mum's the word
DeMeco Ryans not only has refused to proclaim CJ. Stroud the Texans' starting quarterback. When it comes to who's starting, the Texans coach has been careful not to let anything slip out of his mouth.
- Back at work: Case Keenum, Hassan Ridgeway and Tank Dell returned to practice Wednesday after missing various times with injuries.
- More secondary help: The Texans continue to tinker with their secondary, signing former Duke safety Darius Joiner.
