Today's starting lineup

The Astros had a chance Wednesday to move into a share of first place for the first time this season. Instead, they couldn't solve their season-long bugaboo — extra innings — as they lost in 10 to the Red Sox. Another troubling recent trend continued as starter José Urquidy turned in an abbreviated outing, forcing Houston to again dip into its bullpen early. The Astros did get José Abreu back from the injured list while Michael Brantley and Phil Maton are progressing in their recoveries.

Coming Friday, be sure to check out our new new Astros podcast "Bases Covered" with beat writer Matt Kawahara and assistant sports editor Steve Schaeffer on our Astros page.

Joseph Duarte remembers the late Reggie Chaney, a heart-and-soul forward who embodied the gritty nature of UH's basketball program.

If a Texans player wants to learn he's a starter, he better learn to play the waiting game with DeMeco Ryans, a coach who keeps that info close to the vest.

The Dynamo set up a date with soccer's biggest name, beating Real Salt Lake to clinch a berth in the U.S. Open Cup final next month against Lionel Messi and Inter Miami.

The high school football season kicks off tonight across the state. We have a look at the top Week 1 games around the Houston area.

Needville continues to find a way to win at the Little League World Series, advancing to the U.S. championship game with an extra-inning win over the West region.

Stat of the day: 1-8. The Astros' record in extra innings this season. Only the Padres, at 0-10, have fared worse in extras.

No lengthy solution

On a day when the Astros needed length from their starter, they again didn't get it Wednesday, forcing them to go to a taxed bullpen earlier than desired yet again in a loss to the Red Sox.

Embodiment of the program

Forward Reggie Chaney, who died at age 23 this week, epitomized the gritty nature of UH basketball, writes Joseph Duarte.

  • Black hats in Austin: Texas' last ride through the Big 12 will see the Longhorns embrace the role of villains. That should make for some fun, writes Jerome Solomon.

Mum's the word

DeMeco Ryans not only has refused to proclaim CJ. Stroud the Texans' starting quarterback. When it comes to who's starting, the Texans coach has been careful not to let anything slip out of his mouth.
