Public attention to jails tends to land on places such as Harris County's facility, where in-custody assaults and deaths are a regular occurrence, but the number of inmates can distort the relative frequency of violent events.

The plan includes rebuilding LBJ Hospital in northeast Houston to make it the third Level 1 trauma center in the city — and the first outside the Texas Medical Center.

1 detained in connection with deputy's shooting, gunman at large

A Harris County sheriff's deputy was in critical condition Thursday after he was shot twice during a traffic stop. One of two men wanted in connection with the shooting was questioned and released.

HISD teachers give harsh reviews of Miles' back-to-school skit

Houston ISD Superintendent Mike Miles took center stage Wednesday morning at NRG Center in an elaborate production with acting, dancing and singing geared toward challenging critics and energizing educators.

The 8 a.m. update Thursday from the National Hurricane Center shows three areas of interest. The circled area in the western Gulf of Mexico has a 20 percent chance of seeing tropical development in the next seven days.
