Today's starting lineup

Texans fans' seven-month wait to see their team play a game, even if it's just the preseason, ended Thursday night in New England. On a night of debuts for key personnel, the Texans cruised past the Patriots, whose Bill O'Brien-led offense struggled in an undoubtedly delicious subplot for Houston fans.

Brooks Kubena dissects the debuts for rookie quarterback C.J. Stroud and offensive coordinator Bobby Slowik. Jonathan M. Alexander says to withhold judgment on Stroud based on just two series with some key supporting personnel missing. What's more important, he writes, is what comes next for the ex-Ohio State star. In another notable development Thursday, the Texans' QB competition continues as incumbent Davis Mills enjoyed a solid night.

They threatened at the end, but the Astros could not pull off the series sweep in Baltimore. Rookie catcher Yainer Diaz sent a message: Test his throwing arm at your peril. Houston was down two men on the bench with José Abreu and Chas McCormick both sidelined.

Jerome Solomon says while the Rangers and Orioles are having great seasons, they're no match for the Astros' championship pedigree.

How Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers has grown more comfortable entering his second season as the Longhorns' starter.

Stat of the day: 3. Consecutive Texans coaches who won their preseason debuts in as many years: David Culley (2021), Lovie Smith (2022) and DeMeco Ryans on Thursday.

Night of debuts

Rookie QB C.J. Stroud played only two series but rookie coordinatorobby Slowik showed "different nuances" from last season's Texans in Thursday's preseason-opening win at New England.

  • Time to practice patience: Don't rush to judge C.J. Stroud for his debut performance, writes Jonathan M. Alexander. What's more important is what happens next for the rookie.
  • Notebook: Third-year quarterback Davis Mills looked sharp in his stint Thursday, meaning the quarterback competition likely will continue.
  • How it happened: Revisit how the Texans' preseason victory over the Patriots played out Thursday night.

Astros / MLB

No sweep for them

The Astros twice got within a run but couldn't pull off a series sweep in Baltimore, leaving the bases loaded to end the game.

  • Bring it on: The Orioles tried to run on Yainer Diaz on Thursday. Repeatedly. Each time, the Astros' young catcher showed them that was a bad idea.
  • Absence TBD: José Abreu was out Thursday with a back ailment, one that will be evaluated after the Astros return home from Baltimore.
  • Banged up: Chas McCormick was out of the Astros' lineup Thursday after being dinged up while playing the outfield the previous night.
  • On deck: Astros vs. Angels: Houston holds a 7-3 edge heading into the AL West rivals' last series meeting this year beginning tonight at Minute Maid Park.

Tried and true

Beating over/under win projections like the Orioles and Rangers are doing is nice, but it's no match for championship experience like the Astros have, writes Jerome Solomon.

Settling in

After winning the starting job in spring football, Quinn Ewers is more focused on being a leader and improving his accuracy in his second season as Texas' quarterback.
