Eastside, stand up. North Shore, the No. 2-ranked team in the state, started the 2023 high school football season with a 38-17 victory against The Woodlands on Friday evening at Woodforest Bank Stadium. The Mustangs were the Class 6A Division I runners-up last season, losing to Duncanville in the state championship game. Coming back this year, the team has a new head coach in North Shore alum Willie Gaston, who took the reins after four-time state champion Jon Kay departed for an assistant coaching job at Rice. Gaston's debut at the helm could not have gone much better. North Shore took control early against a formidable Highlanders squad. The Mustangs were aided by the triumphant return of quarterback Kaleb Bailey, who has recovered from a torn ACL suffered early last season. Bailey went 20-for-29 for 266 yards and three touchdowns and added another score on the ground. "I've been doing this all my life," the junior signal-caller said. "A little injury ain't stopping nothing." |
