Death toll from Maui wildfire reaches 89, making it the deadliest in the US in more than 100 years

Authorities in Hawaii say a fire that swept through a picturesque town in Maui this week has killed at least 89 people, making it the deadliest U.S. wildfire of the past century. The new death toll Saturday came as federal emergency workers with axes and cadaver dogs picked through the aftermath of the blaze, marking the ruins of homes with a bright orange X for an initial search and HR when they found human remains. At least 2,200 buildings were damaged or destroyed in West Maui, Gov. Josh Green said, with damage estimated at close to $6 billion across the island. Two of the victims have been identified so far, Maui's chief of police said.

Trump's Iowa state fair spectacle clouds DeSantis as former president is joined by Florida officials

Gone was the helicopter, but Donald Trump is renewing his reputation for defying norms and creating a mega-celebrity's spectacle at the Iowa State Fair. In fewer than two hours Saturday on the steaming fairgrounds in Des Moines, Trump attracted thousands of sweating, chanting supporters to his stops at the Iowa Pork Producers tent, a baby farm animal exhibit and a popular Grand Concourse pub. All the while, Trump not-so-subtly tried to set himself apart from Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, Trump's main rival with five months until Iowa's leadoff caucuses and who was on the fairgrounds at the same time.

Rejected by USF and nearly jettisoned by Illinois, Jones' Kerby Joseph set for breakout NFL season in Detroit

USF pulled Kerby Joseph's scholarship offer in the 11th hour and he almost was run out of Illinois by coach Lovie Smith, but now he's thriving with the Lions, who missed the playoffs on the final day of his rookie NFL season. Joseph led them in interceptions.
