The volunteer group has been block walking to spread the word about the Texas Education Agency's takeover of HISD and collect signatures for a petition demanding an end to the state takeover and returning HISD's leadership to the hands of Houston voters. So far it has received about 6,000 signatures, according to the group.
Why do they disagree with Superintendent Mike Miles and the takeover?
While the team at CVPE agrees with Miles that HISD has historically failed students of color, they also think some of Miles' initiatives — replacing libraries at NES schools with "Team Centers," implementing a pay-for-performance model for teachers and installing strictly regimented schedules and curriculums — will do more harm than good.
"We pay for waste disposal today. And they're very profitable businesses because we recognized garbage left in the street was a health hazard," said Chris Jones, a chemical engineering professor at Georgia Tech. "It's the same thing with carbon dioxide. We can't leave our garbage in the atmosphere."
