Today's starting lineup
Kyle Tucker's home run in the seventh inning on Tuesday gave the Astros a 6-5 win over the Marlins and a brief chance to forget a worrisome night in Miami.
In the top of the first, Jose Altuve fouled a ball of his shin, and although he finished the at-bat with hit No. 1,997 of his career, his night was done and the Astros were left to wonder if it was another injury for their star in a season full of them.
Then came starter Cristian Javier, who had shown positive signs in his last three starts. But he struggled again and couldn't get out of the fifth. It was enough of a step back to show concern that his issues the last two months haven't gone away. Matthew Kawahara has the analysis.
But back on the positive side, Michael Branley was on the field for the first time this season and homered in three at-bats in a rehab assignment in Sugar Land.
Houston's other baseball team of note, the Needville Little League, opens play in Williamsport, Pa., on Wednesday. Matt Young has a look at Houston-area teams and their history in the World Series.
At Rice, the Owls introduced new athletic director Tommy McClelland. The school has always had potential, it's up to McClelland to turn it into reality, Jerome Solomon writes. One issue for the school is what to do with Rice Stadium, which is aging and too big for the new model.
On the field, Texas A&M's defense vows to be better the second time around under defensive coordinator D.J. Durkin. At Texas, Arch Manning made strides in a recent scrimmage but Quinn Ewers is still set at quarterback. And at UH, Joseph Duarte picks out a dozen things we've learned so far.
The Texans had Tuesday off. They start practice sessions with the Dolphins on Wednesday. Miami was one of the best teams on screen passes last season, an area a hard-charging team like Houston could find problematic.
In the NBA, schedules were unveiled for the first in-season tournament. The Rockets have a tough group that includes the defending champion Nuggets.
And as scenes of loss continue to pour in from Maui in the wake of wild fires, former Warriors and Mavericks coach Don Nelson is opening his homes in Hawaii to help those displaced by the fires.
