Are Katy school lunches the best in Houston?

As Houston area districts usher in a new school year, food service teams are hard at work to ensure students are fed balanced meals to fuel them through the day.

Even Houston's most popular restaurants would be hard-pressed to keep up with the demand that schools' food service teams meet every day.

We're asking readers to help highlight local school cafeterias by sharing which Houston area schools they think serves the best lunch. Help us shout out quality cafeteria food by taking this reader poll.

Katy ISD starts classes Wednesday. Ahead of students' return to campuses, families can find information about school meals on the nutrition and food services department's website. The site details how to apply for free or reduced price meals, set up a SchoolCafe account, and what to do if your child needs dietary accommodations.

Openings and Closings

South of Katy, frozen yogurt chain Yogurtland is looking to open a Sugar Land location by September, the Chronicle's Juhi Varma reports. The shop will sell a variety of frozen treats. The location will join three existing Houston area Yogurtlands which are in Westchase, Cypress and Memorial City.

Shout out

Congratulations to the 80,730 Fort Bend ISD students who started their school year last week! The district was able to provide more than 16,000 supply kits to students this year. Read more about their first day back in this story by reporter Juhi Varma.

Best of luck to Lamar Consolidated ISD students who kick off classes today, and to Katy ISD students who will return to school Wednesday!

One last thing ...

Texas is home to the nation's largest renaissance festival, which is set to open Oct. 7 in Todd Mission. Opening weekend tickets are on sale at discount prices. You can find the details in this story by reporter Ralph Green. The festival, now in its 49th year, draws visitors from near and far.

I haven't been in quite a while, so I plan to go all out when I make the trip this year. If you're a regular, what local shops have the best selection of Renaissance garb? Please send suggestions my way at melanie.feuk@houstonchronicle.com.
