Today's starting lineup

Justin Verlander's return to Houston was what got top billing as the Astros began a brief homestand. Instead, it was Jon Singleton who stole the show in his own Minute Maid Park homecoming. Singleton clubbed a pair of mammoth home runs, providing goose-bump moments as the Astros routed the Angels in their series opener. Verlander was plenty good himself as he picked up career win No. 251. Meanwhile, could José Abreu's injury cause the Astros to reassess their situation at first base?

C.J. Stroud got the lion's share of attention during the Texans' preseason opener, but another first-round pick was also making his Houston debut. Brooks Kubena looks at how Will Anderson Jr. fared in limited action. Meantime, Jonathan M. Alexander looks at which players' stock is rising and whose is dipping with the first preseason game in the books.

UH's defensive line has made a name for itself with "Sack Ave." The Cougars look to build on that budding tradition when they begin play in the Big 12 this fall. UH also won't be seeing the last of Oklahoma after their sole season as Big 12 foes, as the Cougars and Sooners agreed to a nonconference home-and-home series.

As Gregg Popovich enters the Basketball Hall of Fame today, the NBA's all-time winningest coach is most proud of how he helped players grow as people

Stat of the day: 8 and 13. Years and days between home runs in the majors for Jon Singleton. It's the longest gap for a position player since shortstop Rafael Belliard went 10 years and 144 days between 1987 and 1997, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.
