Today's starting lineup

During this golden era of Astros baseball, there hasn't been a player to hit for the cycle, one of baseball's rarities. Jose Altuve ended the franchise's wait at 10 years Monday, hitting a single, double, triple and home run in a series-opening mauling of the Red Sox at Fenway Park. Are the Astros on the verge of finally getting Michael Brantley back? The veteran outfielder joined the team in Boston and is "close" to being active.

The roster trimming has begun for the Texans, who have until this afternoon to get to the NFL's 53-man roster limit. Cuts began Monday with two notable veterans getting pink-slipped. In his latest stock report, Jonathan M. Alexander looks at who's rising and falling in the wake of Sunday's preseason finale.

It's college football game week around the area. While they aren't wearing "Hello, My Name Is" stickers at UH, the Cougars have plenty of newness surrounding the program, from the roster to their conference. In College Station, Jimbo Fisher names Texas A&M's starting quarterback after a competition for the third straight year. Texas' Steve Sarkisian responds to some eyebrow-raising comments from Big 12 commissioner Brett Yormark. And Texas Southern and Prairie View A&M get a big game to start the season.

Rampage continues

Hitting for the cycle Monday against the Red Sox is a continuation of the tear Jose Altuve has been on since returning from injury.

  • Beantown beatdown: Led by Jose Altuve, Yordan Alvarez and José Abreu, the Astros slug their way to a series-opening win at Fenway Park.
  • Any day now?: Michael Brantley joins the Astros in Boston and it could be "in the next couple days" when a determination is made regarding activating him.
  • Tradition unlike any other.: The Astros' Hunter Brown, J.P. France, Corey Julks and Yainer Diaz each explored Fenway Park's Green Monster and signed their names on its interior, maintaining a tradition for rookies.
  • Breaking down the race: Among the AL West title hopefuls, the Astros have one of the easiest remaining schedules in all of baseball, while the Rangers and Mariners will face each other seven times in the final 10 days.
  • Pat Corrales: 1941-2023: Pat Corrales, the first MLB manager of Mexican-American descent, has died at age 82.

Something new

After an offseason of change — the addition of 42 players and a move to the Big 12 — coach Dana Holgorsen finally has a game to get ready for as the Cougars host UTSA on Saturday.

  • Know your foe: UTSA: An early look at UTSA, UH's opponent in Saturday's season opener for the Cougars.
  • Weigman the choice: Conner Weigman gets the nod as Texas A&M's starting quarterback over Max Johnson in what Jimbo Fisher called "a very tough decision."
  • Sarkisian responds: Texas coach Steve Sarkisian has a rebuttal to Big 12 commissioner Brett Yormark's comments about Texas Tech needing to take care of business in Austin this year.
  • Hit the ground running: SWAC rivals Prairie View A&M and Texas Southern won't waste any time getting to a big game with their week 1 showdown.
