The past few years have shown the havoc weather can wreak on our community, from devastating flooding to piercing cold to our current summer of record-breaking heat. Understanding how our climate works can be critical to preserving people and property, and to meet that need, we're launching the Texas Weather Wonks. Our team, in tandem with the San Antonio Express-News, is made up of forecasters and subject-matter experts who will provide in-depth analysis of weather events and useful daily forecasts to help you navigate your everyday life. - Roberto Villalpando, a longtime editor and self-described meteorology nerd, will oversee the team. He most recently worked as a breaking news editor and weather beat writer at the Austin American-Statesman.
- Justin Ballard is our newsroom meteorologist. He comes to Houston from University of Florida/Florida Public Media, and his experience on the Gulf Coast will serve him well here.
- Anthony Franze is the San Antonio meteorologist, and will assist Justin on daily forecasts. He knows Lone Star State weather well from his previous role as chief meteorologist for KWES-TV in Midland.
See a taste of the team's early work with this explainer on heat and humidity. This investment aims to fill a critical need in our community. The team's mission is simple: focus on science, help you navigate your life, report relentlessly, use data to explain complex information – and have fun. |
