While there's no way to know how many wells remain unplugged (or which plugs are failing), the Texas Railroad Commission maintains a database of orphaned wells around the state.

Called "zombie wells" by some, unplugged legacy oil wells can spew climate-warming gases and toxic waters. And it's coming at a steep cost for Texans.

Some HISD teachers in Miles' reform program upset after receiving lower salary offers than expected

Some Houston ISD teachers at schools in Superintendent Mike Miles' New Education System were upset Monday morning to wake up to contract offers with lower salaries than what they expected, and, in some cases, lower than what they earned before.

Houston mayoral candidates broke city ordinance by accepting campaign donations from contractors

Mayoral hopefuls state Sen. John Whitmire and U.S. Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee have both accepted campaign donations from city contractors during prohibited periods, breaking a Houston ordinance designed to limit donors' influence in City Hall.

Paxton group gives Patrick $3 million before impeachment trial

Defend Texas Liberty PAC donated $1 million to Patrick's campaign in late June, followed shortly by a $2 million loan, according to new campaign finance data.

Heights day care seeks alcohol-free Houston zoning law change

While the option has long been available, Kelly Rosin, owner of Heights Preschool on Oxford Street, was the first to lodge an application with the city to prevent future bars or liquor stores from opening within 300 feet of her child care facility.
