Pearland voters have approved a $181.4 million bond package to fund drainage, street and sidewalk improvements, expand parks and provide a new fire station. The bond included four propositions that were included on the May 6 ballot. Learn more about each proposition here. Proposition C intrigued me the most. It will provide $33.7 million for park projects, including $17.3 million to expand Hickory Slough Sports Complex and $16.3 million for improvements to Independence Park. In January, supporters of the Pearland Soccer League gathered at a City Council meeting to pressure the city to create more soccer fields to accommodate the growth of soccer teams in the area. Proposition C aims to help address that issue by funding six lighted sports fields, doubling the size of the parking lot and adding a playground at the Hickory Slough complex. After the successful opening of the Ed Thompson inclusive playground, the Forever Parks Foundation hopes to add inclusive playground equipment to both the Hickory Slough complex and Independence Park. The city estimates the bond package will add $24.38 per year to the total property tax amount due the city on a $250,000 home. With appraisal values on the rise, I'm curious to know your thoughts on the property tax impact. Why were you for or against the bond propositions?
