| With the Astros having a travel day before starting a nine-game road trip in Seattle, we take a break from worrying about their offense or pitching depth to share the story of César Salazar as told by Danielle Lerner. Salazar moved from Mexico to the U.S. as a teenager in search of greater opportunities in education and in baseball. He devoured books and CDs that his dad gave him about successful leaders and business people, mining whatever knowledge he could about how they achieved their dreams. He earned the starting catcher job at the University of Arizona, was drafted by the Astros in 2018, and spent five years in the minor leagues before the shot at his dream finally arrived this spring. Now that it's here, now that Salazar is on the Astros' major league roster, maintaining that hungry mindset is perhaps even more imperative. From the inspirational story of Salazar, we turn to a sad story. The death of former Texas basketball player and NBA executive Lance Blanks, a star from the old McCullough High School in The Woodlands and the state's Mr. Basketball in 1985. As Mike Finger notes, Blanks was a joy to watch and be around. The same enthusiasm that compelled UT fans in 1990 to "Dance with Lance" bled into everything Blanks did, whether he was putting a young Spurs draft prospect named Tony Parker through a one-on-one workout, broadcasting games on TV, or helping raise two daughters while caring for his long-ailing dad, a pioneer in the integration of college football. Stat of the day: 39. Three-pointers by the Warriors in their first two games against the Lakers in the NBA playoffs. It is the most for the Warriors in team history in any two-game stretch of the postseason. |
