If the Biden administration moves slowly to approve federal oil and gas leases, it also jeopardizes the development of clean energy, Sen. Joe Manchin cautioned Tuesday. Manchin was pointing to the administration's legal obligation in the Inflation Reduction Act to clear oil and gas leases on federal lands and waters at the same rate as wind and solar, reporter James Osborne writes. "Failing to take an 'all-of-the-above' approach to energy security puts the administration at risk of taking a none-of-the-above approach," Manchin, chair of the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee, told Interior Secretary Deb Haaland during a hearing. "You'll get nothing. That's how important this is." The exchange came as the administration seeks to reduce U.S. reliance on fossil fuels, drawing pushback from an oil and gas industry that maintains the administration's climate policies are hurting its ability to produce. The administration's five-year plan for offshore drilling is several months overdue. |
