Last year, Kingwood doctor Spencer Greene had his busiest year ever, treating 60-plus snake bites. The emergency medicine physician and medical toxicologist at HCA Houston Healthcare Kingwood has received a bit of notoriety after treating the most snake bites in the country last year, but he was already well-known for his snake events like the Houston Venom Conference. His first snake bite patient this year was on Jan. 3 and as of the time of this writing, he has already treated 24. That's many more than it was at the same time last year, when he had only seen five snake bites. In fact, before his story was posted online, I had to change it from 19, to 20, to 21, to 22 and so on because they just kept coming in. In the story, he explains his two reasons for the huge uptick in snake bites in the story and reminds visitors to the ER who come with a snake bite to leave the snakes at home! You would think that goes without saying, but not necessarily. Did you know that a dead snake, even just the head, can still envenomate you? Tell me your snake stories! And if you want to follow Greene on his Facebook, tell him hello from The Observer! Here's the link. Let me hear your stories at dtaylor@houstonchronicle.com. |
