Good morning, folks. The rain continues this Thursday. Most days, the most disturbing thing about Houston for me is not the traffic or pothole-filled roads or even the humidity. Instead, the most disturbing things are the insects, bugs and creepy crawling creatures. And I just found out about another one that I can add to my list of creatures that creep me out. | | Cat DeLaura Audience Engagement Producer cat.delaura@houstonchronicle.com |

Today we're talking about Pappas Restaurants and Hobby Airport... |
If you read one thing: With losses at City Council and in district court, Pappas Restaurants will move out of Hobby Airport overnight Thursday into Friday as it continues its legal battle against the city. What's moving out of Hobby Airport? Travelers will no longer be able to eat at Pappadeaux, Pappas Burger, Pappasito's, Pappas Bar-B-Q or a combined location of Dunkin' and Baskin Robbins. What's moving in? In place of the Pappas Restaurants Friday will be a Hubcap Bar & Grill, Pink's Pizza, Gastrohub Bistro and Bar, Streat Bar, Bullrito's and Pick Up Stix. In the fall, Fat Cat Creamery, a new Dunkin', The Spot Bar and Velvet Taco are expected to join the lineup. They will be followed next year by The Rustic, Jersey Mike's, Pei Wei, a new Chick-fil-A, Throughgood Coffee, two Starbucks locations, Common Bond Cafe, Yard House, Killen's Barbeque, Spindletap Brewery, Dish Society and Longhorn Steakhouse, along with a new Pink's Pizza location and Wendy's. A scene from near the border in El Paso. |
If you read one thing: Title 42, the public health policy used to turn millions of migrants away from the border since the COVID-19 pandemic, expires today. Reporter Sam González Kelly and photographer Raquel Natalicchio are currently in El Paso documenting what's happening at the border right now. Here's the story of one man they met this week… Roner Santana had been told by the border agents who had processed and released him that he was required to check in regularly with immigration authorities and that he had one year to voluntarily remove himself from the country. He might not wait that long. Santana, 26, said that after he jumped the wall, he headed to Sacred Heart Church but was intercepted by law enforcement officials who beat him and jailed him for four days. He didn't know what law enforcement agency apprehended him. When he eventually arrived at the church, he heard jeers from locals who shouted that he and other migrants were not wanted here. Santana is now confronted with a difficult choice — he can't go home to Venezuela, where economic and political instability left him without the means to feed his wife and two children, but neither does he want to stay somewhere he isn't wanted. Santana believes he was targeted by officers for his tattoos, but what they didn't realize is that the name tattooed on his neck, Rosianny Sofia, is that of his late 3-year-old daughter, who died in a Venezuelan hospital because doctors couldn't access the medicine she needed. He is determined to make sure his other two children do not suffer the same fate and is contemplating where he may go next. Canada, he says, is an option. "I don't feel free here. I came here with an American dream, I thought it would be different," Santana said in Spanish. Read the full story here.

I'll be out again for a few more days to spend some much-needed time with my family. We're currently spread out across multiple states and two continents, so getting more than two of us together at one time is always a bit of a feat worth celebrating. Cat DeLaura cat.delaura@houstonchronicle.com |
