Before we get to the Astros' big win over the Angels behind the pitching of Framber Valdez, let's take another moment to reflect on the passing of Deacon Jones. Jones, a longtime Astros batting coach and key figure in the founding of the Sugar Land Skeeters, lived a life of love and baseball that included taking advice from Jackie Robinson, taking a stand on racial injustice and loving the game. Jerome Solomon reminds of the treasure he was. For the current Astros, Valdez showed again why he is one of the top pitchers in baseball. He struck out 12 and allowed just three hits as he outpitched Shohei Ohtani in a 3-1 win. The championship-era Rockets were on display late Monday night/early Tuesday morning for those who stayed up to watch TNT's Inside the NBA postgame show. Robert Horry fielded questions from Charles Barkley in a game-show format and let slip a few nuggets from the 1994 and 1995 championship teams. The current Rockets are hoping for their numbers to come up in the lottery next Tuesday. Jonathan Feigen's look at the top prospects continues with Amen Thompson. Can we say the Texans are still rebuilding? Perhaps it's time to stop. A look at Nick Caserio and where the team stands from Brooks Kubena. Jimbo Fisher and the Aggies aren't exactly rebuilding but they don't want a repeat of last year's 5-7 record. Fisher won't make any predictions other than to say the team will play hard and if it does that, the talent should take care of the rest. Stat of the day: $50 million. UH's fund-raising efforts hit the $50 million mark, about a third of the way to the goal of $150 million. |
