It's the Monday after Election Day, and the results are in. Congratulations to all the winners. According to data from all 61 Fort Bend voting centers, our general turnout was 6.29 percent with 25,586 ballots cast. Fort Bend ISD voters approved all three propositions in a historic $1.26 billion bond package that will fund a sweeping array of projects, security upgrades and infrastructure updates including a rebuild of Clements High School. In Stafford, Mayor Cecil Williams defeated three challengers and retained his seat. The school boards of Lamar CISD and Fort Bend ISD will welcome new members, bringing fresh faces and outlooks to the table. In Fort Bend ISD, Angie Hanan, Shirley Rose-Gilliam and newcomer Sonya Jones won their respective races, with Jones, a veteran teacher, defeating four opponents, including incumbent Denetta Williams, for Position 5. Hanan and Rose-Gilliam will be sworn in for their second terms and Jones for her first at the May 15 board meeting. In the Lamar CISD races, incumbent Jon Welch easily won a second term, while new candidates Jacci Hotzel and Suzanne Box emerged victorious in their races. The trio will be sworn in on May 16, with 268th District Court Judge Steve Rogers overseeing the ceremony. Amid the excitement of the elections, we must acknowledge the low voter turnout, which is a worrying trend. The school board election is an opportunity to elect representatives who will make decisions that directly affect our children's education. What are your thoughts on the results? Are you surprised by any of them? Write and let us know at juhi.varma@houstonchronicle.com. |
