The first Mother's Day was observed in 1908 by Anna Jarvis, who held a memorial for her mother, Ann Jarvis. Ann Jarvis had been a social activist who cared for wounded soldiers during the Civil War. She had also organized Mother's Workday Clubs to address public health issues and promote child welfare. After she passed away, her daughter started a campaign to establish a national holiday honoring mothers. Her efforts paid off in 1914 when President Woodrow Wilson signed a proclamation naming the second Sunday in May as Mother's Day. Also, do you know why Mother's Day is celebrated in March in the United Kingdom? Their Mother's Day is held on the fourth Sunday of the Christian festival of Lent. It was traditionally a day off for servants, who could go home and visit their mothers. What's your favorite thing about Mother's Day? Write and let us know at juhi.varma@houstonchronicle.com. |
