| Growing up in the public school system, I recall the times when my high school went into lockdown due to a threat posted on social media. I can remember the anxiety I felt while sitting next to my classmates for hours and waiting to hear an update. I couldn't text or call anyone from my phone because of a bad signal and that worried me even more. My classmates and I were lucky that nothing bad happened to us and the threats stayed just that — threats. The day after these potential threats, we were back to normal as if we weren't panicking 24 hours before. A Gen Z group of activists called Project Unloaded believes America's gun culture is a reason behind such fear and is campaigning through social media. Anna Bauman reported that the group launched a social media campaign called SNUG — Safer Not Using Guns — roughly a year ago in Houston and Milwaukee. It has since expanded into 10 more cities, according to the organization, and the message has reached more than a million people on Tik Tok and Snapchat. What are your thoughts on gun violence? Do you believe it is a problem? Why or why not? Let me know at pooja.bhakta@chron.com. |
