| Abigail Tomaski and Ivy Oliver combined to score 38 points and Memorial improved to 5-0 in district play for the first time since 2015 with a 65-32 home victory over Jersey Village Saturday afternoon. The Mustangs (17-9, 5-0) have won three consecutive games and have been dominant in league contests, outscoring their opponents — Cypress Creek, Northbrook, Spring Woods, Cypress Ridge and Jersey Village — by an average of 40.4 points. Memorial returns to action at 7 p.m. Wednesday with a home game against Stratford. "We've got kids that can score. That's the thing with us is, we're a skilled program," Memorial coach Jyusef Larry said. "I couldn't even tell you who had the most points. As long as they're going up on our side, I really don't care. Our skill is what gets us through, our skill and our decision-making. If we do those things well, we're going to have a pretty good night." Three weekend takeaways Clutch performances: Dom Amugu and Melinda Winston made some big plays late to help the Hastings girls basketball team earn a 52-45 victory over Alief Taylor on Saturday afternoon. Winston led the Bears with 16 points, six rebounds, five steals and a block. Hastings (18-7, 3-2) needed everyone to overcome an impressive performance from Taylor's 6-foot-3 sophomore sensation, Nataliyah Gray. Despite facing regular double teams, Gray finished with 27 points and 11 rebounds. District title implications: Two of the area's best girls basketball teams refused to give the other an inch for much of a District 20-6A showdown Friday at Hightower High School. After scoring just four points in the first half, No. 11 state-ranked Fort Bend Austin turned the game around in the paint and held on for a 26-23 victory against No. 17 Hightower. The Bulldogs (23-1, 8-0) will face the Hurricanes (22-3, 7-1) for a second time in the regular-season finale on Feb. 8. Pushing through: The Pearland boys basketball team recently lost its best player, De'Arre Farris, to a torn ACL. Despite some trying times this season, the Oilers were dominant on Saturday afternoon during a 78-29 victory over Alvin on their home court. The outcome was never in doubt as Pearland (9-13, 2-1) led 19-3 after one quarter and 31-3 by the 4:29 mark of the second. Follow all our coverage at houstonchronicle.com/highschoolsports. |
