Instant classic: Edwards, Reece lead Grand Oaks to triple-overtime win over College Park.

The Grand Oaks boys basketball team made a big statement Wednesday night.

The Grizzlies prevailed with a 75-72 road victory over College Park in a triple-overtime thriller.

Grand Oaks ended College Park's 31-game district winning streak earlier this season as well. The Grizzlies (19-9, 5-2) remain right in the thick of the playoff race with nine games remaining on the schedule.

Caleb Edwards scored a game-high 28 points against College Park (20-6, 6-2) while Jordan Reece had 21 points, including a layup that gave his team the lead for good. His two free throws with 7.7 seconds left provided the finishing touches.

"This was the craziest game I've ever been in," Edwards said. "Props to (College Park). They're a great team. We practiced hard all week. We had a game plan, and we stuck to it and executed it for the win."

Wednesday's hoops highlights

Stangs sting Spartans: The Memorial boys rallied from a four-point halftime deficit to earn a 42-29 victory over Stratford in District 17-6A action at Don Coleman Coliseum. The Mustangs improved 14-10 overall and 4-0 in league play. Ethan Soares and Matthew Janecek each scored 10 points to lead the charge. Stratford dropped to 13-9 and 3-1.

Tompkins toys with Tigers: The Tompkins boys rolled to a 93-60 victory over Katy in District 19-6A action, a key result for the Falcons' playoff aspirations. They improved to 14-11 overall and 4-3 in league play. Luke Coughran led a balanced night for Tompkins with 23 points. Colton Collins poured in a season-best 22, and Scottie Guillory had 17.

Christian Callens leads Collins: The Klein Collins girls remained unbeaten in District 15-6A action with a 47-33 home victory over Tomball. Christin Callens scored 24 points, and Ashlynn Hollis and Jada Thompson added 10 each as Klein Collins took sole possession of first place. The Tigers improved to 18-4 overall and 6-0 in league play.

Athletes of the week

Congratulations to Grand Oaks basketball player Bree Riley, who was voted our girls Athlete of the Week. Riley scored 26 points on 10-of-17 shooting and had three assists and three steals during a 66-28 win over Kingwood Park last week.

Congratulations to Jordan basketball player Misaias Herrera, who was voted our boys Athlete of the Week. Herrera hit eight 3-pointers and scored 24 points as Jordan defeated Tompkins 97-70 in a District 19-6A game last week.

Football headlines

Austin-bound: Cy-Fair junior quarterback Trey Owens announced his verbal commitment to the University of Texas on Wednesday afternoon via Twitter. Owens is rated as the No. 28 player at his position in the country for the 2024 class by 247Sports. Owens was named the District 17-6A offensive MVP this past season after passing for 2,840 yards and 34 touchdowns against just six interceptions.

Bishop gets coronation: A Willis native and star of the gridiron for Kansas State in the late 1990s is headed to the College Football Hall of Fame. Michael Bishop, the nation's top collegiate quarterback in 1998, was among 18 players and four coaches who earned election in an announcement made Monday afternoon.

Hornsby finds home: Malik Hornsby, a former star quarterback at Fort Bend Marshall, officially found a new home Monday morning. The Arkansas transfer announced his intentions to join the Texas State program under new head coach G.J. Kinne. Hornsby was rated as a four-star recruit from the 2020 class by 247Sports.

Shout out

Eighteen basketball players from the Greater Houston area were announced as McDonald's All-American nominees Wednesday morning, joining 722 other athletes from around the nation. The 46th annual McDonald's All-American Games will be played at the Toyota Center in Houston on March 28. The games will be broadcast on ESPN platforms and will feature 48 of the top players from all over the country.

Stat of the day

Senior running back Kedrick Reescano became the third player from New Caney to be named Montgomery Country Football Player of the Year since 2017, joining former quarterbacks Jordan Cooper and Zion Childress. Reescano, an Ole Miss signee, rushed for 1,849 yards and scored 36 total touchdowns this past season.
